Marion Jones won the women's 100 meters Friday at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston, with a time of 11.04 seconds. She handily defeated runner-up Aleen Bailey of Jamaica.
"I felt really good,'' said Jones, who was competing in an outdoor 100 for the first time since 2002.Her boyfriend, Tim Montgomery, fared worse in his 100. The world record holder finished fourth in 10.25, well behind the winning time of 10.12 by Darvis Patton. Patton won in a photo finish over John Capel.
On Thursday, a promoter of a meet in Belgium, Wilfried Meert, told the Associated Press that he and other organizers want to hold off before committing to an overall six-meet contract with Jones and Montgomery for this summer's Golden League in Europe because of the athletes' association with the Balco Laboratories steroid scandal. (Neither has a positive drug test.)
But Friday, a spokesman for the International Association of Athletics Federations, track and field's governing body, said that the Golden League will not have collective contracts with any athlete in 2004, and that the decision regarding Jones and Montgomery is not related to the Balco investigation.
