Cockfighting has been prevalent in our society since the ancient time. This centuries-old blood sport comprises of fight between two or more gamecocks. Gamecocks are specially bred birds, who are placed in an enclosure to fight. The main goal of this cruel and inhuman game is to gamble and in turn get entertained.  This game also results in the death of either one or both cocks or injuring them critically. A cockfight generally lasts for either few minutes to half an hour.

The birds who are compelled to participate in this cruel game has to continue the game no matter how injured or exhausted they become. Some of the common injuries that the gamecocks suffer are punctured lungs, broken bones, and pierced eyes. He main cause of these injuries is the razor-sharp steel blades or gaffs ( three-inch-long curved ice picks) attached on the birds' legs. These artificial tools  are designed to puncture and mutilate the bird's body.

The combatants or gamecocks are bred in such a manner to increase stamina and strength during the big day. As per the standards set by the American Gamefowl Society and the Old English Game Club the comb and wattle of the bird is chopped off. This procedure also prevent the bird from freezing in colder climates. It's a known fact that most cocks possess aggressive aggression toward all males of the same species. The cock that take part in these games are given best care till their two year's old. They are conditioned, much like professional athletes prior to events or shows. Though, not all game lead to death o the bird but it does affect the bird physically.  Earlier, cockfighting was considered as one of the traditional games in US. With time, the game has been totally banned by various animal welfare activists and others, due to the harm it causes on the bird.
