Croquet is a professionally competitive sport, which can be played with friends as well as in clubs. But playing the game at these two different places means abiding to different tournament rules. Lets research about various game tournaments, where and when they occur, how to enter these tournaments and get a know how of rules for playing the game.

Lets talk about US National Croquet Championships, which occurs between May 31 to June 5. All the set international rules are followed in the tournament, so it is also termed as USCA International Rules National Championship. The tournament of 2005 was held in Seattle, which is the same place where the tournament hosted by Puget Sound Croquet Club was held in 2001.

In the tournament of 2005, eleven of the top twenty Croquet players (determined by world ranking) played the tournament. It was a rule that five out of this year's competitors can claim nine of the last twelve singles titles in the championship. In the same year competitors were allowed to play “plate game, before they were eliminated from the main event”. The plate games went on for two and half hours, whereas the event matches, singles and doubles were limited to only seven and a half hours. All the time limits and technical changes introduced made it easy to run the tournament smoothly and more efficiently.

Entry to the tournament is restricted to personal invitations. Only the players invited via mails can get entry to the place. All the participants are the winners of other national tournaments, which qualified them for the international championship.

It is seen that the tournaments of Croquet did not get required publicity in the past years, but the scenario is changing now. The events are covered by newspapers and magazines, which provide an opportunity to Croquet players to explain the game to the locals and other people who do not know anything about the game.

This years’ tournament ended with a new national champion, Danny Huneycutt, who beat Paul Scott in a three-game match. Stark won the Plate knockout over John Taves. The tournament did receive some media in Washington where it was held, giving publicity to the sport of croquet and providing an opportunity for croquet players to explain to locals and visitors about the tournament, and the sport of croquet itself.
